Ever since entering the limelight with their multiplatinum hit “Body” in 2018, Loud Luxury have continued to establish themselves as mainstays among the top tier of the dance music scene. Their new single “Wasted” is the latest notch in their belt, bringing good vibes aplenty with an irresistible beat and vocals to match, courtesy of LA based rap/pop duo WAV3POP. Sonically, the track is everything one could hope for in a summer release. Neither too funky or bland, the beat is brim-full of warm weather, sunny coastal views, and starry nights delivered in audio form, and is constructed in a manner to give it the type of broad appeal that will allow it too be a regular in clubs and dancehalls or on summer road trip playlists.
The beat has the same mood-boosting qualities of a Marshmellow or Chainsmokers hit, though it is decidedly more pop than experimental, which ought to widen its reach being that no boundaries are being pushed in any of the genres the song touches on. Those looking innovation will have to look elsewhere, but listeners preferring something modern, with good energy that isn’t over-the-top will find that “Wasted” has everything they want, as the Loud Luxury duo have consistently delivered throughout their career.
The song’s other, lesser known duo, WAV3POP, comprised of Atlanta native LANTA WAV3 and Houston-bred GR3Y WAV3 handle the vocal side of things on “Wasted” in what may be the performance that elevates them to national recognition and beyond. They have already made a name for themselves in LA through their own music, ON WAV3 fashion line, and raucous “Verified House Parties” that have garnered coverage from the likes of TMZ and Los Angeles Times, and “Wasted” will provide them with more exposure than they have ever had up to this point. While their is disparity between the two groups in terms of audience, WAV3POP’s contribution to the song is equal to their more-famous counterparts. If Loud Luxury is doing a favor by featuring them on the song, WAV3POP more than return it with the delivery of their vocals. The melodies that LANTA and GR3Y provide are a match to the beat and mainstream in all the right ways. They keep it simple, with lyrics that listeners can sing along with if they wish to do more than simply appreciate the production, touching on the intimate moments that often occur on late summer nights, in the grey area between love and lust.
In addition the to release of the single, the two groups also share the stage on the tracks accompanying music video, which places less emphasis on the borderline-epic feel of the song and focuses more on the fun side that while tapping into a vein of nostalgia. The video borrows elements from a plethora of bygone cultural material, and viewers may find themselves scratching their heads, trying to figure out what show or vague memory the music video is reminding them of. The video centers around a “girl-next-door” theme and is filled with lighthearted shenanigans that are good for at least a few chuckles.
As Covid-19 gradually moves into the rearview, those who haven’t already heard “Wasted” will be introduced to this summer hit the next time they go to the nearest club, and if they hear it once, they’re likely to hear it more and more frequently as the song cements itself in the soundtrack of Summer 2021.
