SEC Realignment Pods Revealed?

SEC realignment

Ever since the news broke, almost two weeks ago, there has been discussion on how adding Texas and Oklahoma would mix up the SEC. There are only a couple realignment options for the SEC when adding new teams to a conference, divisions or the new pod system.

Divisions everybody knows about. You either have an East and West or North and South, creating two divisions in your respective conference. The pod system I like to compare to divisions in the NFL.

For example, the AFC has four divisions AFC North, AFC South, AFC East, and AFC West. Each pod has four teams, that is what we are going to talk about today. Where Texas and OU stack up if the SEC chooses the pod system.

SEC Realignment Options

The most popular pods I’ve seen so far go as such:

West Pod

  • Texas
  • Oklahoma
  • Missouri
  • Arkansas

East Pod

  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • South Carolina
  • Kentucky

North Pod

  • Tennessee
  • Vanderbilt
  • Alabama
  • Auburn

South Pod

  • LSU
  • A&M
  • Mississippi State
  • Ole Miss

My colleague, Ryan McAloon, has his prediction for how the pods will play out, which you can find in his article here. However, I would like to see something a little more outside the box. Here is my pod wish list:

Pod 1

  • Texas
  • Florida
  • Tennessee
  • Ole Miss

Pod 2

  • Oklahoma
  • Vanderbilt
  • Georgia
  • Arkansas

Pod 3

  • Alabama
  • A&M
  • South Carolina
  • Auburn

Pod 4

  • LSU
  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi State
  • Missouri

Do I actually think my wish list is a possibility? Absolutely not. However, I do think it would be nice to mix things up a bit. Now you probably noticed that I have Texas and OU in different pods. That does not mean Texas won’t be playing Oklahoma every year.

The SEC would have designated rivalry games to be played every year. Meaning, Texas and OU (although in different pods) would play each other in the Cotton Bowl every year. It was fun playing around with all of these different possibilities and seeing what the SEC could look like as early as 2022.
