The QB battle between Hudson Card and Casey Thompson will soon be decided. Anwar Richardson reported yesterday via Twitter, “Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian said they will shift toward preparing for the season opener against Louisiana in the middle of next week”. With Sark and Co. preparing for, top 25, Louisiana Lafayette starting next week it’s almost certain Sark will have named his starter by that point.
It would only make sense for Sark to know/name his starter so he can start to install the gameplan for week 1. The reports coming out this week via Brian Davis have been Hudson Card is taking the 1st team reps. That could just be Sark letting the 2 (Card and Thompson) share the 1st team reps. It could also mean that Card has overtaken Thompson for the starter job.
Whichever the case may be, I believe we are in very good hands having 2 QBs who could start on just about every team in the Big 12. This is definitely a good problem to have, I just hope whoever doesn’t get the starting job doesn’t transfer out right away. I would understand it from the players perspective, but as a fan I would hate to see either Card or Thompson leave the 40 acres.
So far during the whole spring/summer I thought Casey Thompson would win the starter job, but I am switching my pick to Hudson Card. Not only does Card have the better arm and fits Sark’s scheme better, but now he is also getting the majority of 1st team reps. This late in the process with only 17 days until the first game, I don’t think this is just coincidence. I believe Sark knows Card will be the starter and he’s allowing him to get the preparation he needs.
I’ll end on this note. Whoever wins the starting job should be able to lead this team to at least 9 wins. If this team goes 8-4 it would be a bad year, in my opinion. Sark needs to win 9+ games to consider this season a success. I really don’t think that is too much to ask for with the talent this team has. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the QB battle, as well as how many wins does Sark need for you to consider it a successful year. Let me know your thoughts on our Twitter @longhorns_atb.
