The Spencer Rattler sweepstakes have been won by the South Carolina Gamecocks. Shane Beamer enjoyed a successful first season in Columbia, becoming bowl eligible with a Duke’s Mayo Bowl bid after finishing the season 6-6. The college football world was wondering what Head Coach Shane Beamer would do in his first full recruiting season.
And on December 13th, the world is starting to see Beamer’s vision come to fruition. That’s right; the Gamecocks landed former Oklahoma stars Spencer Rattler and Austin Stogner.
Rattler, the former five-star quarterback, had an up and down career during his time as a Sooner. He threw a respectable 39 TD’s to only 12 INT’s during his Sooner career. However, he lost his starting job partway during the season as freshman QB Caleb Williams usurped him
Rattler’s gunslinging game brings some accuracy concerns to the Gamecocks. That said, Rattler’s natural arm talent is one of the best in the nation. Therefore, this bodes well for stability to the quarterback position, something South Carolina has lacked since Jake Bentley in 2018.
The other transfer from the Sooner was tight end Austin Stogner. The second-ranked tight end of the 2019 class, Stogner was a 2020 Second Team All-Big 12 player for the Sooners. Stogner will bring some versatility to the Gamecock offense as tight end and as an H-Back and should be a valuable weapon for Rattler and the Gamecock offense going forward.
In conclusion, these two should help propel the Gamecocks back into national spotlight, somewhere they haven’t been since the peak of the Steve Spurrier era. Gaining Spencer Rattler makes this a great day for South Carolina Gamecocks football. Ultimately, this sets the tone for the Shane Beamer era in Columbia.
