Texas To Add Massive Player From The Transfer Portal?

*Editor’s Note: Ryan Watts committed 12/22/21*

Steve Sarkisian and staff are fresh off their first Early National Signing Day at Texas and already back to work in the transfer portal. After a big day on Wednesday how can it get better later in the week? Let me fill you in below.

Ryan Watts enters the transfer portal

Earlier this week former 4-star cornerback Ryan Watts entered his name into the transfer portal. Watts signed with Ohio State in the 2020 recruiting cycle and played for the Buckeyes for 2 seasons. Over the 2021 season Watts totaled 6 total tackles and 2 interceptions.

In the 2020 cycle Watts was seriously considering Texas before eventually committing and signing with Ohio State. Adding Watts via the portal would be a huge get for Sark in a room that desperately needs depth.

Ryan Watts

Watts is said to be highly considering Texas and has already been in contact with the staff. I have even seen and heard reports that Watts to Texas is basically a “done deal”.

So far this offseason Texas has already benefitted from the portal by landing franchise quarterback Quinn Ewers. Since early signing day is behind us, I expect the staff to hit the portal extra hard over the next few weeks leading up to National Signing Day on February 2nd.

In Closing

In my opinion if Sark wants to accelerate this rebuild, he is going to have to land players like Watts from the portal every year. Adding this type of talent is something that will not only bolster the defensive backfield, but also add an upperclassman from a big-time winning program.

Texas winning really good players from the transfer portal won’t make or break the program, but it will definitely help with the culture problem. Winning programs have a winning mentality in the locker room. That is also something Texas needs if Sark is going to turn things around.
