New England Patriots Shock Fans by Cutting Jabrill Peppers Just Before Week 1 of the NFL Season

Foxborough, MA — Just days before their 2024 season opener, the New England Patriots made a surprising move that’s left fans and analysts buzzing: the sudden release of veteran safety Jabrill Peppers. The decision comes shortly after the NFL’s roster cut deadline and has sparked endless debate over the team’s strategy going into their matchup against the Raiders.
The timing of Peppers’ release raised eyebrows, especially with $4.32 million guaranteed still left on his contract. According to ESPN, Peppers was preparing for his fourth year with the club, following a stint with the Giants and a brief period as a big locker room presence in New England.
“This definitely came as a shock,” one Patriots fan outside Gillette Stadium commented. “Peppers was a favorite on and off the field. We thought he’d be a lock, especially with the way he finished last season.” His play was certainly noticed — Pro Football Focus ranked him as the fourth-best safety across the league just last year.
Inside the team, things seemed to be shifting quietly. Under former coaches Bill Belichick and Jerod Mayo, Peppers was a reliable starter and a favorite in the locker room. However, since the arrival of new head coach Mike Vrabel, his role reportedly began “evolving” during training camp. Both veteran Jaylinn Hawkins and rookie Craig Woodson overtook him on the depth chart, with Peppers starting the final preseason game but unable to hold his spot among the first teamers.
A former NFL scout shared, “Coaching changes always bring new systems and priorities. While Peppers has experience and versatility, Vrabel’s staff may be looking for a different style of play at the safety position, or simply betting on youth.”
Peppers originally joined the Patriots on a one-year deal and eventually signed a three-year extension in July 2023. In his tenure with the team, he appeared in 38 games and tallied three interceptions. His overall NFL record now stands at seven interceptions over 99 games, including three years with the Giants and a start to his career in Cleveland after going 25th overall in the 2017 Draft.
Off the field, Peppers’ time in New England was turbulent. Last October, he faced legal troubles with an arrest for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Although he was acquitted, the situation caused him to miss seven games last season after placement on the commissioner’s exempt list, limiting him to just six appearances.
Looking forward, Peppers is now available to other teams either via waivers—where they would also assume his contract—or as a free agent. Several teams needing safety depth could be interested in his experience and playmaking ability, especially with the regular season about to begin.
One AFC executive suggested, “Even with these recent setbacks, a player like Jabrill Peppers doesn’t stay on the market for long. Teams value versatility and leadership, so it’ll be interesting to see where he lands next.”
The Patriots, meanwhile, seem committed to turning the page, favoring younger, less expensive talent in the secondary ahead of their season opener. Only time will tell if the gamble pays off on the field—and how fans will react to seeing a former favorite suit up elsewhere this year.
