NBA Summer League: Rupert Showcases His Experience
The Las Vegas Summer League is often the stage where young talents earn their stripes and veterans prove their staying power. This week, it was Rayan Rupert who took the spotlight, demonstrating not only his skill but also the experience he’s quietly amassed in his NBA journey so far.
While most of the French contingent saw mixed fortunes in Las Vegas, Rupert, now entering his third season, was the undisputed highlight among them. Playing for the Portland Trail Blazers, the 21-year-old guard lit up the court in a hard-fought 93-87 win over New Orleans, putting up 24 points (sizzling 9/12 from the field, 4/6 from three), grabbing three rebounds, dishing an assist, and snagging two steals in just 28 minutes.
Having been drafted 43rd by Portland in 2023 and with 91 NBA games already under his belt, Rupert’s assertiveness and efficiency were clear. “He’s looking more comfortable every game—his decision making and shooting have noticeably improved,” commented one Blazers assistant coach after the game. Fans and analysts noted that his performance stood out in a night when other prospects failed to make similar impacts.
In contrast, fellow Frenchman and recent Portland addition Sidy Cissoko managed just 4 points (1/6 shooting) and five assists in 20 minutes. Golden State’s summer trialist Léopold Delaunay offered a spark off the bench, scoring 8 points and handing out three assists in a Warriors win, while Minnesota’s rookie center Joan Beringer—who had looked promising in earlier outings—had a quieter night with 3 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks.
Star rookie Alex Sarr, n°2 in the latest draft and a member of the All-Rookie team last season, didn’t take the court for Washington. Orlando’s new French forward Noah Penda also sat out his team’s loss to Oklahoma City. Elsewhere, it wasn’t a night to remember for Nolan Traoré (Brooklyn): The young point guard struggled with his scoring, finishing with just 2 points on 1/8 shooting.
Summer League is about more than stats—it’s also about growth and learning to adapt at NBA pace. As one scout at the event put it, “What you want to see is confidence and the ability to bounce back from an off night. Rupert is showing what it means to use Summer League to fine-tune your game, not just chase numbers.”
With each team now three games into their Vegas schedule and the competition to make the semi-finals heating up, eyes remain on which players can convert strong summer runs into regular season roles. Rupert’s poise and production are setting the tone, hinting at a promising year ahead for the young Blazer.
